Leif E. Boman
Sound Composer and Visual Artist
Based between Linköping (Sweden), Palma de Mallorca (Spain), and Marrakech (Morocco)
Hailed as “one of the most interesting and important artists of our time” (Art in America), Leif.E.Boman has, for over three decades, produced work at the intersection of art, science, and sound ecology. His work actively engages both sight and hearing:
“Confronted with Boman’s art, one cannot remain neutral; one must engage with what is seen and heard… His work profoundly moves me—it is inescapable,” writes art critic Bo Borg (AICA).
A pioneer in the use of emission spectroscopy, he captures the invisible frequencies emitted by matter—what he calls mattergy. These emissions are analyzed, converted into audible sound, and composed into immersive soundscapes. For Boman, visual perception alone is not enough—his approach seeks to awaken all the senses and reveal the hidden energies of places.
Since the 1990s, he has pursued a global project collecting soil from 196 countries. Each sample, drawn from historically or emotionally charged locations, becomes material for reflection and creation, feeding a continuous exploration of their symbolic and sensory power.
Through his work, Boman seeks to reveal the invisible and the whispers beneath the surface. He frequently collaborates with scientists, believing that “if they kept silent, the stones themselves would cry out” (Luke 19:40). As Rumi wrote: “When seeds are buried in the dark earth, the hidden secrets become a blossoming garden.”
